Enclosed garden in Bruges
Date
2004
Locatie
Bruges, Belgium
Designed by
Barbara Claerhout
The concept behind this garden, enclosed within the heart of Bruges, was to create an oasis of seclusion and tranquility preserving the unique atmosphere of the historic city. The gate at the end of the garden serves as a gateway to the city, providing direct access to the medieval canals.
The garden is symmetrically designed around a historical water well, a relic from the owners' previous garden. Yew and boxwood hedges define the symmetrical structure, lending the garden a sense of dimension and space. The design contrasts vibrant, colorful sections—filled with Roses, Hydrangea, Salvia, Alchemilla, and Geraniums—with a more subdued, shaded area where Hostas create a peaceful space for reflection for the devout owners.
